Abstract: | Data from all in-vitro-fertilisation clinics in Sweden (=5856 children born between 1982 and 1995) were compared with data regarding all babies born in the general population (n=1 505 724). The rate of prematurity was higher in the IVF group ( 30.3 vs 6.3%). The rate of very low birth weight (<1500g) was higher (27.4 vs 4.6%). The rates of neural-tube defects and oesophageal atresia were higher than those in the controls. There was no increase in childhood cancer in the in-vitro- fertilisation group. |

Discussion: | This is the most important study on this subject. For obvious reasons we need to wait several years to have the results of studies assessing these children after puberty. |
