| Abstract: | 242 adults who committed suicide by violent means were matched with 403 biological siblings born during the same period and at the same group of hospitals. A birth 'trauma score' was calculated for each subject. The number of times opiates were given within 24 hours before birth was recorded. A great number of potential confounding factors were taken into account. Among men multiple birth trauma multiply by 4.9 the risks of subsequently committing suicide by violent means. Among women multiple birth trauma do not influence the risks. If the mother received multiple opiate treatment during delivery there is a decreased risk of subsequent suicide by violent means. |
