Abstract:The aim of this study was assessment of cognitive behavioural and social development of children born after IVF when they had reached an age of at least 36 months. The study comprised 99 IVF children. Their development was assessed with the Griffith's scales of mental development. The children's behaviour was evaluated through semi-structured interviews with their mothers, covering 50 different behaviours. The mothers also filled-in Achenbach's child behaviour check-list. All children were examined by a paedistric neurologist. The results were compared to Swedish population groups. 66% were singletons, 28% were twins, 12% were triplets and 28% were born prematurely. The cognitive developments and behaviour of the IVF children was normal when compared with two Swedish population groups.

Discussion:This is the first study to examine a large group of children who were old enough to have overcome the setback of prematurity. For obvious reasons we need to wait several years to have the results of studies assessing such children after puberty. See also entry 0102 and 0118.
